I have come not to like posting Not My Photos but it seems like I prefer pulling out my camera and taking decent, share-worthy photos when the sun is out as well. I don't think I like this gloomy summer. In a few days though, I am going down to Canberra for the weekend, primarily to see the Renaissance exhibition there at the NGA. Cool stuff. But wait, there's a bit more. I recently got a new lens for my Canon AE-1P, and since shooting in film is always fun and pretty, perhaps there will be a post on that. In the meantime, up there are some recent Flickr favourites. I feel like they're quite fitting of my current mood.

I have to blame my initiation to online shopping on a) getting a job, and b) procrastination, and also my Visa debit card and Paypal account for facilitating the exchange of my well-earned money. I discovered Ebay during the end of Semester 1 exams, and Etsy during the end of Semester 2 exams and a whole myriad of other online shops in between. Here are three shops that I browse a lot... for my future reference.

Been going out much more than I used to, and spending much more than I should. Today, I went to the Glebe markets after having a huge Thai lunch, and added to the inventory of my clutter the umpteenth ugly woollen jumper, Appian's Civil Wars, and Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings trilogy with illustrations by Alan Lee. Day well spent.

There are a lot of things I have been meaning to give a listen, and also things that have a nice cover but not something I had never thought about lending an ear.

Took a ferry to Manly today on a whim. To make the most of a MyMulti ticket. To get myself out of the house. I caught up with a friend and we talked a lot, drove around the north shore, had some sorbet. All in all, a very good day. This is all a part of my personal challenge these holidays to get out more and find new appreciation for the city I live in.

IKEA + uni

Saturday was a most horrific day for me (minus the masked psychopaths with chainsaws) full of work for most of the day and Cityrail trackwork horrors when I was trying to get home in the afternoon. The upside though, in my struggle to get home, was that I stumbled upon the new IKEA in Tempe. I didn't know what I was expecting, but I had wanted to have a look. I think that once you go to one IKEA store, you've been to them all. Nevertheless, it was a wonderful distraction from my transportation frustration.

This was at about 6:30pm. When I left IKEA, the sun was setting, and it was glorious. The rain had literally not stopped for the whole week (since my last post) so this was the first sunlight that had come into contact with my paler than pale skin for seven days.

And here are some more photos from exam fun times. The sun being out is nice and taunting when you are stuck inside a library with two Latin textbooks and two more exams and the aircon set at stupid, I-don't-think-being-close-to-hypothermia-helps-you-study-better degrees Celsius.

Exams are over now, so no more uni until next year! but still, I don't think I'll be wanting to make a habit out of this nocturnal blogging/living. It's 4:40am and I'm still not even tired.

it was raining at the beach

I went to Sculpture by the Sea at Bondi yesterday with my family. I was really looking forward to spending some good few hours walking around in the sun. Despite having to have my umbrella up at least 40% of the time, it was a good afternoon spent outdoors, followed by a nice dinner to farewell my sister who left for America this morning. I took many photos of the sea, and occasionally pointed the camera towards the sculptures.

This is the fifth or sixth year I've gone to Sculpture by the Sea. Although I like how the exhibition twists the conventional art-viewing experience (i.e. makes it more accessible, interacts with the environment, engages the community...), I'm finding that it's more like a fair or sculpture carnival rather than an exhibition of art but I guess that is the point. I'm also not sure if I'd rather experience art in a gallery, where the curator or artist can manipulate the lighting, arrangement of the walls, the colour of the walls, etc. to complement the works, than along the Bondi to Tamarama walk where the sites have barely changed from year to year so the sculptures seem to interact with the space in a certain way and perform very similar functions (providing nice photo ops so people can dp it on their fb). So that's my two cents about outdoor art exhibitions. I'm not sure whether it's very cohesive or not. Also, I'm so sick of oversized or found objects with the label 'sculpture' slapped onto it*, but that is another (elitist) rant for another time.

* before you tell me I should have gotten the catalogue and read the artist statements, I got the catalogue and read the statements, and I still didn't buy it.

Fone pix: taking a break from studying on Wednesday at Sydney Uni. I had a study date with my friend on Wednesday at Schaeffer library (my personal favourite library at Usyd to hit the books) that went extremely productively, however, despite the productivity, it turns out that there is a lot more to do than I originally anticipated. Photo of the notes I wrote because I like the way my handwriting looks but it must be nightmarishly distracting to read, especially when written under exam conditions (sorry markers).

miscellophaneous minestrone

I don't think I was setting out to make minestrone soup, but it seems like it headed in that sort of direction. Last night, I was inspired to use the millet in the pantry in some kind of soup. I didn't follow a recipe but I did read some soup recipes last night just to get a gist of times and everything.

Serves 2-3 and I would say, prep takes 15 minutes, cooking time 45 minutes.

What I used (listed in order of using them):

1.5-2 tablespoons of olive oil
0.5 tsp of whole cumin
black pepper (or to taste)
2 small onions, diced
1 medium carrot, diced
2 cloves of garlic, whole
1 teaspoon of salt (or to taste)
3 cups of hot water
thigh from leftover roast chicken*
some millet^
2 tomatoes, chopped up
1 chili pepper, whole
4 mushrooms, halved

* you could indeed easily leave the chicken out, thereby having the soup completely animal-free. You could also use stock instead of the water + chicken, but we didn't have any and so I got creative.

^ I never measure ingredients like olive oil, cumin, salt, black pepper or millet. Any measurement I have given is an estimation. Regarding the millet, I used about just enough to cover the lid of a jar. In hindsight, I should have used more. You could use substitute the millet for something like rice, quinoa or even pasta.

How you should do it (I did it differently and learned that I should have done it more like this):

Heat the olive oil in a heavy-based saucepan. On low to medium heat, sauté the carrot, onion and garlic with cumin, salt, and a few twists of the peppermill of black pepper.
Before the vegetables begin to soften too much, cover them with water. Add the chicken and millet. Return to the boil, and then lower the heat and cover for 5ish minutes or until the chicken is just beginning to fall apart.
Add the tomatoes, mushrooms and the chili. Simmer for 30-40 minutes, or at least until the millet and the carrot are soft.
Et voilà, kids, that's it! Serve and season with black pepper or anything you want.

Two things I really love are tomatoes that have been cooked for so long that the flesh has come apart from the skin, and really juicy mushrooms. Other things I am keen to try this out with: celery, beans, zucchini, potato, pumpkin, broccoli, more herbs and spices. I think this is a great way to get a huge hit of vegetables in one go.

Weekend in Melbourne

Some photos from our weekend in Melbourne. My sister and I drove down to Melbourne on Friday and Saturday, leaving Sydney in the afternoon of Friday and stopping that night in Gundagai. We eventually arrived in Melbourne in the afternoon of Saturday. It was raining. We went to the Melbourne museum that night for the King Tut exhibition which was fascinating. Night at the museum... spooky.

We didn't really have a plan for Sunday so we headed to St Kilda. Firstly, we had a walk around the botanical gardens...

... and then we walked around the beach and the markets.

The last stop for Sunday was the NGV before heading back to the apartment for an early night.

We left Melbourne at 6am on Monday morning for the long drive home, taking the coastal route which got us home at 11pm. It was beautiful and interesting and totally worth the extra 200 or so kilometres.

My front page looks a bit depersonalised at the moment due to a current flat-lining of creative brain waves. Tomorrow begins my (seemingly) annual pilgrimage to Melbourne, which will hopefully Shake It Out. Melbourne's winter exhibitions which are usually superior to those of windy Sydney, however, I am very much looking forward to the AGNSW Picasso exhibition coming to Sydney next April, and the Powerhouse Museum's Harry Potter exhibition this summer.

Other things on the horizon include my reading renaissance. A combination of high school and too much time on the internet killed the joy I found in reading that I had before Year 9. My birthday was a few weeks ago and for my birthday, I got some Orwell and Huxley and Burgess. And then last week, there was a book sale in the Great Hall at uni, and I just could not resist taking home a whole box for only $5.

The thing that I liked about this time last year (with the end of Term 3 of Year 12 approaching) was knowing that in another few months, high school would be finished. The feeling of not knowing what was after that was scary and exciting and liberating despite the intense stress, pulling my first all-nighter, being stuck in all sorts of ruts. I find that in structure, studying at university is not that much different from year 12, except for the fact that exams come around twice every year.

“I see the world as a kind assembly kit, a grand stage, as image and simulacrum.” - Thomas Wrede.

Thomas Wrede’s perspective and humorous edit of the landscape on its most basic level represents a mirror for our dreams, wishes and yearnings. His landscapes, places and stories on second glance make no sense at all and cannot really exist. Thus Wrede’s work humorously unmasks our constructions of perception and landscape by showing us a kind of concentrate or hyper simulacrum. On closer inspection Wrede’s monumental depictions are an assembly of different realities. Wrede’s world is usually photographed half a metre above ground level. What appears as an endless ocean or a monumental mountain most often is “just” a puddle or a heap of sand on one of the endless beaches in Northern Germany or an old coal-mining field in Laussitz, Germany. With the help of model cars and parts of the model railway assembly kits, Wrede stages a kind of film set for the viewer to contemplate his or her perception. The irony to find the ocean in a puddle kind of brings Thomas Wrede’s questioning of our reality perception and motifs of yearning or longing to a culmination.

Since I started working a month ago and gotten off my bum, I have lost a bit of weight and muscles have appeared on my arms. Why pay to join a gym when you can get paid to wait tables?

For those who haven't realised, I changed my tumblr url. In the spirit of my new username, I will share with you an enokitake recipe I conjured up today. You will need:

a small bunch of enoki mushrooms, cut and cleaned
a teaspoon (more or less) of butter
a slice of bread
a teaspoon of cream cheese

It is very simple: toast the bread (in a pan or in a toaster). Melt the butter in a pan. Caramelise the enoki mushrooms in the melted butter in the pan. It should take about 5 minutes (or until golden brown). It would also help to separate the mushrooms a bit so they cook more consistently. Remove mushrooms from pan and put on top of toasted bread. I put a little bit of Philadelphia cheese on top. Voila!

So this is what happened.

Last night, when I went to sleep, I had my computer on hibernate and the ticket reservation pages for both of The Cure concerts open so in the morning I wouldn't have to fiddle around too much. I set my alarm to quarter to nine (ticket sales opened at 9am) so I could calm my nerves and psych myself up to get some good seats. The next morning (this morning) I wake up earlier than my alarm so I take a nap. Several quick naps ensued, slightly due to nerves - what if I missed my alarm? Giving up trying to rack up as much sleep time as I could (normally on Thursdays I can wake up at noon), I warmed up my fingers and took some deep breaths to ready myself for some frantic F5ing.

8:59 ticked onto 9:00. Tickets were open for sale. I checked all the right boxes and I entered all the right numbers, but after clicking "Continue", the page went down. For the hour or so, it was a dark, cloudy sky of errors with quick lightning flashes of some indications of life. I tried the phones but I couldn't get through at all.

In my desperation to get tickets and to not let down my friend, I left the house after having a bite to eat, arriving at the Opera House only to be told that both nights were completely completely completely sold out. Emotions have definitely toned down since then, but I still remain 30% bitter, 20% devastated, 10% maybe this is in some way for the better, 10% 'other'. It was always inevitable that lots of people would miss out, seeing as the Concert Hall seats fewer than 3,000 people and other venues more commonly used for popular music concerts accommodate double or triple that at least (for example, the Sydney Entertainment Centre can accommodate 12,000).

As with any bad experience or loss, we must not discount any gains that may have been imparted. I can definitely say I am 20% wiser from this, in that I now know getting tickets for the IMAX midnight screening of Harry Potter 7 Part 2 will have to involve standing in a queue at the IMAX Box Office itself!

Lost in Translation (2001), unknown source

Although I think that Lost In Translation is one of Sofia Coppola's 'weaker' movies, the absence of a solid plotline that helps underline the fact that it's the spontaneity of being in a foreign place - the getting lost and refinding yourself, meeting new people - that allows you to be comfortable being there as more than just a tourist, but an explorer. I suppose this view can also be superimposed onto life in that getting lost, finding yourself and meeting new people is what makes living all worth it in the end.

Long weekend

/ M83 - The Highest Journey

Three days of this 5-day weekend were spent in a car, hiking, climbing (by which I mean walking) up Australia's highest peak, sleeping, watching LOTR on a tiny TV with mediocre sound, eating, hiking, exploring caves, in a car. I went down to the Snowy Mountains with the family and it was beautiful.

The other two days of this weekend will be spent working. Hooray for holiday rates!

In other news, I didn't go to uni today and I have my first and only mid-sem exam tomorrow, for which I 'studied' today. I'll do some more revision later tonight. I went to Salvos this morning and bought some lovely things. Monday seems like the best day for my local Salvation Army store.

I got a job the other day as well, which is exciting, but the excitement is quickly fading. I have a training session in a couple of days which means I'll have to miss a lecture. This is good because this lecture that has to be missed is a 2 hour Latin lecture which is like a marathon for the mind and patience, but bad because I missed the only other Latin lecture that was on today. It's easily catch-up-able.

I don't use my analog camera as much as I'd like to, and although I would like to use it more often, it's not unreasonable to say that digital photography is better quality, cheaper and easier to organise. Why doesn't this exist and why don't I have one in my possession?

Living in Australia, I sometimes feel like saying "cold weather" is a bit of an exaggeration and a slap in the face of people from climates that have real cold weather (and snow!). But then again, it's not uncommon for a summer day to hit 35°C or beyond and it's expected that there will be at least one or two 40°C+ days per year, so it is a bit funny to me when someone describes a 15-degree day as "warm". Never the less, colder weather is always nicer than not-so-cold weather because it means soup, morning frost, breathing "steam", woollen jumpers, woollen blankets, thick socks, and no ants invading the kitchen and my desk.

As a very beginner knitter with knowledge of only the very bare basics, there are so many things I'd like to be able to make: sheer jumpers, interesting tank tops, heavy cardigans, etc. My next project will be a double knit scarf. Bring on the cooler weather!

I really love looking at people's bedrooms. This statement is as true as it is creepy. It's interesting to me how people fill a predefined space and make it their own. How they arrange things and alter things and add things until the space becomes familiar and emotionally comfortable/-ing.

Sleepy Sunday afternoon that smell like back burning or neighbours' barbecues. That fuzzy feeling from my throat to my stomach from being completely relaxed. The chimney smell that fills the street in the winter. The sound of a lawn mower several houses down. Going for a run and catching the last, most beautiful light of the day. When it starts raining the moment I reach the front door step. The rain when I am in bed. The smell of rain. The cool change that was promised three days ago. Big, bright moons. Finishing an assignment early. Naps. Lying down on the leaves, on the grass, on the sand. Not caring about bugs in my hair or stain on my clothes. Cold evenings in summer and warm evenings in winter. A gentle breeze. Soup on a grey day. Fresh bread. Eating oranges to quench thirst rather than drinking water. Lip balm on desperately dry lips. Switching to the other end of my bed to get a different view when I sleep. Mown grass. The last class of the week, of the semester, of the year. Thursday as the new Friday. Three day weekends. Bumping into old friends. Smiles from strangers. Spare change in a secret compartment of my bag. Good skin days. Good hair days. Finishing a good book. Getting over a worry. The sound of the ocean. People-watching. At the beach, watching boats on the horizon. Body surfing. Thick socks.

Justin Vernon - O're The Hills, 'neath The Gape

I am going to search the world for a perfect hillside with an abandoned church to convert into a loft which I will make into my home. There, I will live and die. I will hike every day, listen to Bon Iver and light candles every evening. The only way people would be able to contact me will be through the post office 10 minutes bike ride away. I will play in the snow and read books by the fire during winter and pick flowers and swim in the lake nearby in the summer. All 365 (+1 for leap years) sunsets and sunrises every year would be memorable and magnificent.

Today was... not am ideal day to be in a far from ideal mood. Before I went to sleep, I watched the Jil Sander show (which was my first livestream). Strife began during breakfast, spent the rest of the day foraging through job sites, applied to about fifteen different jobs in the hope that I'll be suitable for at least one of them, discovered my gut feeling is more than a gut feeling that I would rather have independence than spare cash. Plus side is that most anxieties about university have dissolved. I think I might watch Skins as my final activity as a free person before the first day of semester.

The two above works are by Aleksandra Waliszewska. Her naif-like style and semi-disturbing themes go so well together. It kind of reminds me of childhood nightmares in general... yet so oddly appealing.

I don't know how to feel now that my four month break is almost over. For one thing, it's a relief - no more nocturnal living, no more 24hr boredom, mundanity is coming to an end. On the other hand, I'm a bit anxious/excited about university because my mind has been mush since my final "pens down" last November. Anxious about the classes; excited about meeting new people, being at a new institution that is very different from high school, learning new things.
